I. Introduction

by PonCo,

Today, we can observe an imbalance of power and wealth among countries. There are inequalities on military strength and economic power that exist among nations. Power is controlled by the few. This imbalance has created a division between developing countries and developed countries.

Philippines is one of those developing countries who are facing a number of difficulties. Over the past years, our country has not experienced a continuous rapid economic growth unlike our neighbors who have done greatly to reduce poverty and have already overtaken us. Instead of a rapid economic growth, our country is experiencing a fast population growth. The government is having a hard time managing very little budgetary resources in order to meet the necessities of the expanding population. Our country is also experiencing poverty, poor productivity growth in agriculture, unequal distribution of land, corruption, high illiteracy rate, and the low quality of services.

What can we do now to improve the condition of our country?

II.Our Senators: Law makers or law breakers?

by PonCo,

One important contribution of the Mesopotamians, particularly King Hammurabi, is Law. Law is a set of rules that is imposed in a society. Law plays an important role in a society. A society uses law as the primary building blocks of that society. It gives a society a structure, and even the way we live is structured by law. We are affected by law in our daily lives. Law binds us together.

Philippines has law too. However, we have a different definition of law. Filipinos ignore the existence of law. Although they know that an act is forbidden and is punishable by law, they still do it. Law in the Philippines just serves as a suggestion. It is hard to accept that Filipinos disregard the importance of law here in the Philippines. But, it is even harder to accept the worse fact that our future law makers are one of the present violators of laws. Election laws, which are supposedly enforced strictly during campaign period, are violated by the candidates.

III.Entertainment Politics

by PonCo,

Today, many of our politicians are also celebrities: Bong Revilla, former President Estrada and many others. Celebrity politicians are often criticized because they often lack the credentials of an efficient legislator. However a celebrity running for office does not occur in our country alone. In America, Schwarzenegger became California’s governor. In Ecuador, celebrities such as beauty queens are also running government positions

IV.Campaign period: An Environmental Problem

by PonCo,

Campaign period has begun and candidates are doing there best in campaigning. However, this campaign period has created a lot of waste. Those illegal posters and streamers are making Metro Manila ugly. Metro Manila Development Authority, or MMDA, is exerting a lot of effort in order to remove these posters and streamers that uglifies Manila. They have shredded a lot of illegal campaign posters. However, these posters just create trash which uglifies Metro Manila more. It is ironic that one of the platforms of these candidates is to improve the environment while they are the ones who destroy the nature.
