Profile:
Born from a middle class family in Baler, Aurora, he finished Bachelor of Laws at the University of the Philippines. He achieved his Master’s degree from the University of Michigan in United States. Angara was elected president of the University of the Philippines from 1981 until 1987.
In 1987, he decided to enter politics and became a senator until 1998. He became the Senate President for 2 years, from 1993 to 1995. He attempted to run for presidency against Joseph Estrada, the vice-president back then, in 1998. As he realized that he could not win against such a popular persona, he ran for vice-presidency instead. However, he didn’t achieve victory.
In Estrada’s administration, he was appointed Secretary of the Department of Agriculture. When Estrada was impeached, Ronaldo Zamora resigned as the Executive Secretary and Angara replaced him. He is now an incumbent running again for senator this coming 2007 election.
Focus this term:Education
Opinion:
Candidates always include education in their platform. However, we see little improvement in education and an increase in the candidate’s wealth. Nonetheless, we see the need for good education in the Philippines. Not only could education lift our economy and way of living, it could also lead to further advancement made possible by the flat world.
Angara is a pro-Charter Change (ChaCha) senator. We personally do not like Charter Change because we do not see the point in wasting millions of pesos for changing laws when no one is following them, anyway. The country’s priority must not be changing its laws; rather, it must be education and discipline of the people.
True enough, Angara is a brilliant senator capable of many things but will he utilize his skills for the common good?

Profile:
born in Naga, Camarines Sur, he graduated as a scholar at the University of the Philippines and achieved the title Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws. He got his AAPL at the Ateneo de Manila University. He started his professional career as lawyer in 1953, serving the middle class and low income families.
In 1972, Ferdinand Marcos, under the Proclamation 1081, declared Martial Law throughout the land. At that time, Arroyo was the first senator to question the Supreme Court of the declaration’s legality, under the 1935 Constitution of the Philippines.
Under Aquino’s administration, he was appointed as the Executive Secretary, issuing Executive Orders for President Aquino. However, upon the release of a Communist Leader, Jose Maria Sison, a coup was triggered. Because of the pressure in the government, Arroyo decided to resign from his position.
In 1992, he served as the Congressman of Makati. He had a record of 100% attendance for 9 years in position. He also played a major role in the impeachment of the former President Estrada. He earned the respect of the people and was elected senator and received a huge number of votes in 2001. He is known as “the thriftiest senator” and he doesn’t spend the government’s money for traveling abroad.

Opinion:
Here in the Philippines, it is rare to find politicians who save money or have little wealth. Arroyo is one of these rare men. And he stands firmly by his principles.

Profile:
A retired Director-General of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and an incumbent senator, he is running as an independent candidate for this year’s election. Lacson worked at the Metropolitan Command (Metrocom) Intelligence and Security Group, PC-INP Anti-Carnapping Task Force, as Provincial Commander of the Province of Isabela, as Commander of Cebu Metrodiscom, and as Provincial Director of the Province of Laguna. He was then appointed to the Presidential Anti-Crime Commission as Chief of the Task Force Habagat. However, in 1995, he was charged as the mastermind of the infamous Kuratong Baleleng Case.
Lacson took up Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy at the Lyceum of the Philippines University. He entered at the Philippine Military Academy in 1967 and was given a commission in the Philippine Constabulary. In 1996, he earned postgraduate degree of Master in Government Management from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.
Opinion:
He is despised by many Chinese-Filipinos who believe that he is responsible for the kidnappings of some. He also faced the Kuratong Baleleng case (he was accused of the unlawful shooting incident of criminals in Quezon City) in 1995.
Panfilo is a well-disciplined police who would probably look after himself and other politicians, too. He already had some years of experience and has authored a number of laws.

A Filipino actor, Cesar Manhilot, popularly known as Cesar Montano is quite new in the political demesne. Montano went to the Sta. Ana Elementary School and finished Engineering at the Lyceum. Though a multi-awarded actor, and a director and producer he lacks the credentials of a good legislative.
Last February 2007, the Philippine Daily Inquirer, in its Breaking News Section, said that Tourism Secretary Ace Durano, spokesman for the administration's TEAM Unity, an administration party, confirmed that Leyte Governor Jericho Petilla is pulling out of the senatorial lineup and will be replaced by actor Cesar Montano.
Opinion:
He is another celebrity politician who lacks credibility. Even the courses he took in college had nothing to do with work in the Senate.
Montano is a newcomer and most probably knows nothing about politics.

A native of Surigao del Sur, he got his BS Commerce from De Salle University in 1970. Since 1998 until today, he has served as the Representative of the 1st district of Surigao del Sur. It was also in 1998 that he started to run his publishing and printing businesses namely, Carlo Publishing and Carlo Commercial Printing.
If elected this year, he would focus on these issues: livelihood, education, disaster management and environment, alternative energy resources, defense and national security, and youth and sports development. According to the Database of the Congress, his net worth sums up to 26,372,282 pesos (total assets (in pesos): 33,322,980 and total liabilities (in pesos): 6,950,698).
Opinion:
It was reported that Prospero Pichay ranks first in spending for his television campaign, having spent about 33 million pesos. We believe that it is not practical to spend so much for campaigning. That 33 million could be used for far more important things. Instead of wasting their time and money on worthless advertisements, they should concentrate with their platform and future plans, and how to implement them.
If he wins, will Prosper Pichay bring us prosperity, or will he bring prosperity only to his bank accounts?

He is the grandson and grandnephew of former senators Vicente Yap Sotto and Filemon Sotto. He entered politics as a Vice-Mayor in Quezon City in 1988. While holding the position of Vice Mayor, he made a lot of progress in eradicating illegal drugs. He was named National Vice-Chairman of the Citizen’ Drugwatch and was even awarded twice the International Award of Honor by the International Narcotic Enforcement Officers Association. He is a former senator and he served for two terms in the Senate, from 1992 to 2004.
Aside from a political career, he is famous celebrity, a comedian and a composer as well.
Opinion:
He is one of the celebrity politicians who lacks the credentials of a good legislator despite his experience. He was once in the opposition.

Profile:
A political and military figure, he was known to be the spokesperson of the Magdalo Group, a troop of armed soldiers against the present administration, which recently led a coup d’état. Born in Manila, he took up BS ECE at De La Salle University. He also attained BS Naval Systems Engineering from Philippine Military Academy (PMA) and graduated a cum laude.
He attained numerous of awards in academics- Mathematics Plaque and Physical Sciences Plaque, and the Tambuli Award (Electrical/Electronics Engineering). He got his Master’s degree in Public Administration and Major in Public Policy and Program Management in the University of the Philippines, Diliman Campus.
Opinion:
Trillanes is young politician with courage to defend and to stand by his principles. As we may have observed, young people have new ideals that are needed in the society today. The veteran politicians think in old ways that are no longer suitable in the new world. Though people may say that they are more experienced, it is also good to have some new blood in the political stream.
Trillanes aims to straighten the wrongs of the current systems in both the AFP and the government. However, some people doubt his personal motives, whether he is really for the betterment of the country or after selfish agendas.
